Good afternoon everyone

Please see the press release below along with the two attached documents with reference to a new Academy for all 16-19 year olds. I would be grateful if you could please forward this onto your membership database within your clubs as this offers a fantastic opportunity for young players to continue their cricket pathway whilst achieving BTEC or A Level qualifications.

Press release – The Root Cricket Academy and Sigma Sixth Colchester are forming a new collaborative partnership to offer a brand new cricket academy for 16 – 19 year olds based at the new £25m Northern Gateway Sports Complex just the other side of the A12 from Colchester United stadium near the park and ride.

Students have the option of studying either a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport, equivalent to 3 A levels, or 3 separate A levels of their choice, alongside high quality coaching and development within the Cricket Academy. We will be linking this provision to National Governing Bodies, Professional clubs and local clubs.

The cricket academy will partner with the Root Academy, founded by the current England cricket captain Joe Root’s father Matt, and is endorsed by Joe. We will also link in with Essex CCC and Essex Eagles.

The facilities on offer will be second to none, including a brand new sports hall with 4 indoor cricket nets, allowing students to study and train full time all year round as if they were a professional cricketer.

Quote from Jon Taylor, Director of Sport, “Having ran sports academy programmes over the last 15 years, achieving success at local, regional and National level, we are so excited to be able to move to brand new state of the art facilities in Colchester, working in partnership with a number of providers and organisations. With our Post 16 students being able to combine level 3 study through either BTEC or A level pathways alongside their cricket, receiving the very best coaching and development from highly qualified professionals, the future for our young people looks very bright indeed. They will have the option of going onto University if they so wish, or to pursue a career in sport through a wide variety of roles
whilst having the time of their lives.”
